Friday Five: Five Things About Me

27 Jun

This week’s Friday Five linkup (an awesome weekly event hosted by Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC, Mar @ Mar On The Run, and Cynthia @ You Signed Up For What!) is themed: 5 Things About Me.  This is my first week linking up with some of my favorite bloggers, and it just happens to be a perfect theme to introduce myself!

Friday-Five-Five-Things-About-Me

1.  I love to read, but don’t make nearly enough time for it.  I absolutely refuse to go e-reader.  There is absolutely nothing more pleasurable to me than thumbing my finger along the pages of a brand spanking new paperback.  If they ever stop printing books, I swear an oath to all that right and holy that I will never read another new release!  I will not relent!  Save the printed word!  Anyway…this summer, I bought several new reads and promised myself that I would get through a few of them.  Right now I’m almost finished with Orange Is The New Black (yeah, I’m a bit late to that party!) and I can’t WAIT to sink my teeth into The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman.

2.  My dream in life:  to run a small urban farmette.  I’m in love with the idea of being self-sufficient, growing my own food, canning, and raising small domesticated animals.  People think of this concept as terribly out of character for me because I’m the type of girl who kind of hates to get dirty.  I make exceptions! 🙂   Eventually I would like to turn my front yard into an edible foodscape and if I can convince my borough that it’s a good idea — get some chickens for my backyard.  I’m pretty sure my cost of living would drop exponentially if I had a farmette.  I need to make this happen!

3.  I am currently training for my first official 10K – Pittsburgh’s Great Race.  I ran 6.1 miles in the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay back in May, so hopefully my training will pay off and I will have an official 10K PR of around 1:05:00 or less.  <– Throwing that goal time out there like it ain’t no thang!

4.  My favorite thing to eat and make in the whole wide world is key lime pie.  I have a very distinct memory of a trip I took to Key West with my grandmother and 2 of my cousins.  I think we ate so much key lime pie on that trip, we were all at risk of turning into key lime pie.  They had it everywhere and in all of these glorious variations.  We even got a piece of key lime pie frozen on a stick.  Heavenly!  I remember making them often in high school and even into college.  I haven’t made one in a long time, though…no time like the summer, right?!

5.  I love what I do for a living – owning a small business has been the most character-building, hard, frustrating, exhilarating, gratifying, terrifying experience of my life.  I have learned so much about myself in the last few years (not all of it is good!) and I’ve also seen glimpses of the person I am destined to become.  Some days I feel like I still haven’t found my niche in life, my passion.  I’m okay with that.  Eventually I will figure it out, but for the last few years it has been such a blessing to develop, launch, and grow a successful company.

I was a massive hold out on the e-reader thing at first. I eventually got one, the most basic black/white simple model I could get (nook b/w with glow light), and instantly was hooked, haven’t missed holding a paper book one bit. I’m overly happy I got the simple one that uses eInk for the screen, it is perfectly visible in direct sunlight (high noon on the beach in Costa Rica), where as people with the fancy color ones or tablets cant see sht in the sunlight. Being able to sit on my porch at night reading by the very dim LED glow light in the ereader has been amazing.

Although, I will admit that it is no fun being unable to read because your battery is dead. That’s one thing you never experience with paper.

Oh man after all of these comments, I may have to actually try an e-reader! They definitely seem to have more pros than cons as far as convenience and utility. There is nothing worse than trying to catch some light from the streetlamp when I’m trying to read in bed without keeping anyone awake!

I always said that about e-readers myself – I turned my dining room into a library for goodness sakes 🙂 But I ADORE my E-reader. Panic when I don’t have it with me. I will still buy books sometimes but its just so easy to have the e-readers. I was on a soap box against them for years, but you’d be surprised how nice they are. You don’t have to give up ‘real’ books forever if you go an e-reader way 🙂

10k’s are my favorite distance to run… have fun getting ready for it! 🙂

100% honesty: I have used the Kindle app on my phone when I was in a pinch (had an assignment due but forgot the book so I purchased it for Kindle). I just couldn’t get into it! I need to dogear pages and underline my favorite passages, all the obnoxious things librarians hate! Thanks for stopping by and reading 🙂

I love books too but I really love my Kindle! Now, when I go on long work trips I never run out of books. I’ll go through 5 or more books on a 2-3 week trip where I bring one carry-on size suitcase, so it’s pretty impossible to pack enough physical books. I just got a new Kindle Paperwhite and it’s amazing. Still love libraries though!

Yay, you linked up! I’m also a big reader & always hated the thought of e-readers. But then my company got me an iPad& I was thrilled how easy it was to be able to start any new book within seconds of buying it. Still like paper books better though! #5 is awesome. And…I’ve never had key lime pie! Must try it soon!

    • SOLEfortheSoul June 27, 2014 at 5:28 pm #

Oh you have to try it! It’s better in the south but I’m sure there are some Yankees other than myself who can pull it off! Don’t know anywhere in the burgh that makes them though…

Oh I totally agree, books on paper are the only way to go. There is nothing better than cracking open a brand new book:) Although I don’t buy as many now, I work PT at a library and when the new books come in I take great pleasure out of being the first to read a new copy:)

New, used, falling apart, I don’t even care – I can’t get enough!

Thanks for linking up with us. I love love love “real” books but there is also a place for the digital book in my life, especially since I travel a lot. I always have books, plural, available on a trip. But yeah, I love real books too and hope they don’t die!
