Memorial Day Weekend Wrap-Up

27 May

So far, this last weekend was the most relaxing weekend of the year for me.  Low key combined with gorgeous weather – you just can’t ask for more.

I was off work on Saturday, so I spent the majority of the day cleaning my house, shopping, and prepping for parties I would be attending Saturday night – Monday.  I just love a good Memorial Day picnic, don’t you?  🙂  My friends had a little gathering at their house on Saturday, which was random and fun.  I actually didn’t take a single picture because I was having too much fun!

On Sunday, I headed up to New Castle to visit my family and ate the best meal in the history of the world.

Lamb on the rod absolutely smothered in hot pepper sauce and garlic sauce, Syrian bread, and a kale-Brussels sprouts salad I made.  So good.  Can you tell I like garlic sauce?  YUMMMMMMMMM!  The key is to dip the Syrian bread in all the garlicy pepper oily lamb sauce.  DO IT!  I also made a Strawberry Jello Pretzel Salad, but I didn’t snap a pic (it wasn’t very photogenic anyway!).

On Monday, Christina and I took advantage of some serious Memorial Day savings at the Ross Park Mall and then I ended up back at my friend’s house for some more festivities.

Grilled Chicken & Veg Kebobs with veg medley, mushrooms, and baked beans.  More yumness!

Bea Arthur had a smashingly good time with 2 new pals, Gus and Lily!  She found a new bestie in Lily because they both loved being chased and chasing each other.  She was so tired that she passed out on the way home and didn’t wake up once – it was a very nice alternative from the vomiting that the car usually induces.

I hope everyone else had a wonderful Memorial Day – full of food, family, and freedom!  Thank you for your service, vets!!

Merry Christmas Eve Eve!

We added a new member to our fur family over the weekend!

This tiny little thing is full of so much sweetness you wouldn’t even believe it.  She’s an apricot and white mini-labradoodle with beautiful green eyes. When she grows up, she will be between 20-25 lbs. and be about knee height (think Cocker Spaniel size).  That seems like a long time away because she is only about 5 lbs. at 10 weeks old right now!

I cannot get enough of her and I’m afraid she may not ever want to walk again because the only time I put her down is to take her picture.

We picked her up from the breeder Sunday afternoon and spent the entire rest of the day/night getting to know her a bit better.  Basically, we cut her nails and then cuddled with her until we couldn’t keep our eyes open any more.  She didn’t mind the trim and all, and man was she a big fan of the cuddling!

How can you give someone a name that will last them their whole life when you just met them!?  She is very curious about us, inquisitive and observant.  I see so many poodle qualities in her and I just adore her.  My mom says that her hair looks coarse and wiry in these pictures, but I swear it is the softest peach fuzz I’ve ever felt.  Nameless and very shy, she is starting to settle in among her giant new friends.

So far, she loves to follow Liberty around, wag her tail, and take naps.  Every hour, I feel like a little bit more of her personality comes out and I am holding my breath until she feels comfortable enough with us to turn into the wild puppy woman I know is lurking beneath the surface.

And then, she fell asleep in my slipper.  The End.

5 Thing Friday

2 Aug

1.  Since Christina and I will have flipped our second house on Tuesday, we decided it was time to upgrade to a better house.  We’ll be slumming it here until further notice:

CarnegieLibrary

I wish.  Except I’m almost sure this building is haunted.  Liberty and I made it a point to pass by this place, The Carnegie Library of Homestead, yesterday during our walk.  It got me thinking that I might want to rejoin the athletic club.  They offer no-contract memberships, where you can pay month to month for $35 a month.  This includes access to the pool and all group classes (which are mostly geared towards Silver Sneakers).  Still, its quite a deal and they do have some really nice equipment.

2.  I’m like practically a farmer now.

jalapenoharvest

Last night, when we got home from working on the rental house I noticed that my jalapenos were starting to get these dark patches on them.  I assume that means they are ready to be picked, considering they are approximately 3 inches long.  I’ve still got around 4 peppers not quite ready to pick, so if I messed up it won’t be a total loss.

3.  This morning was my first attempt at a kale smoothie.

kalesmoothie1

It was delicious, but I won’t be sharing the recipe until I like it better.  The kale was not quite processed enough and to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the yogurt/almond milk base that I used.

4.  The Great Race offers a free running clinic for racers, which I of course signed up for.  I am excited to head down there tomorrow and find out what kind of running shoes I should buy.  I know my current shoes are the reason for my horrible shin splints and I’ve put off getting new ones until I can talk to someone about my pronation.

5.  All week long, I’ve been taking one of the dogs with me on my runs/walks.  It has made all the difference in the world.  It’s so much better than running with another person – different paces can present problems and I prefer solitude.  My little buddies go at my pace and stop when I want to stop and take breaks when I want to take breaks.  Their enthusiasm and excitement never wavers.  And honestly, I’ve taken far less walking breaks this week because I can see how much they love to keep going.  On top of all these reasons, its good for them.  They are cooped up inside most of the time, aside from running at the dog park every other week or playing with each other in the backyard.  It’s been a great change for everyone!
