Winning At Life!

19 Jul

I don’t even care that it’s mostly full of beverages and condiments.  It’s MINE.newfridge.2

Bonus:  We got it in the scratch and dent section (it has one little dent in the freezer door, which is barely even noticeable) for oh….almost $1200 off the original ticketed price.  I feel like having a Duck Tails moment and rolling around in gold coins right now!  Bwahahahaha!  I’m winning at life!!!  And…done.

Here’s another reason I’m winning:  When I got home from vacation, Mother Nature + my MIL had taken such excellent care of my plants that they are doing great.

It’s day 44 for the container garden and everything is blossoming.  Both jalapeno plants look just like this, I’ve got one small bell pepper and the eggplant just flowered today.  We’ve been eating leaf lettuce for weeks!  In August, I might try my hand with some more lettuce, spinach, peas, and either rutabagas or kohlrabi.

And because two potential forever homes had to back off at the last minute, we’ve still got this little nugget hanging out with us!

He is perfect in almost every way.  He’s very smart and listens so well!  It makes me wonder how his brothers and sisters are doing at their forever homes.  We’ve gotten a few photo updates, but no calls.  He is also house trained, which will make his transition that much easier.  The more time he spends with his parents, the better.  They are teaching him all about being a good boy.  He is especially enjoying all the QT he gets with his daddy.

Sorry for the blurriness, I was afraid that if they noticed me they might move!

What’s going on in your neck of the woods?  Are you dying from the heat wave as well?

Home Grown

Visiting my parents over the weekend got me thinkin’….

Its weird how I grew up as such an “indoor person,” if you know what I mean by that.  I was never a tomboy, didn’t play sports, didn’t particularly like being out in nature (bugs, dirt, wildlife, etc. etc. etc.).  My parents, however, love to be outside.  They spend hours enjoying their yard, their garden, their patio – don’t really have to be doing anything in particular.

Gardening and landscaping is one of several activities that bring my parents immediately to mind.  Its one of the things they spend so much time doing, and doing together.

Last summer, my parents didn’t grow their garden.  My mom was adjusting to a full time job and numerous kids activities.  How did we go a whole summer without fresh veggies from the garden????  I certainly don’t have a green thumb – I can’t even keep herbs alive.

Last night, I baked chicken with some of the banana peppers my parents had planted, at my sister’s insistence.  Delish.  In fact, I’ll be making some of their zucchini tonight for dinner!

Enjoying my parents garden and the vegetables we are still eating from that garden makes me wish I had tried a little harder to grow veggies this summer.  I don’t regret joining a CSA, but next summer I will make it a priority to grow the veggie we love the most: zucchini!  Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of their humongoid zucchini plants…oops!

Why shouldn’t I be able to enjoy my yard as much as my parents enjoy theirs?  Its just a matter of making the space irresistible!

The ONLY Time of Year I Suggest Visiting New Castle

16 Jul

For those of you fortunate enough to have never visited New Castle, Pennsylvania (where my parents live), you might not know its the “Fireworks Capital of America.”  No, really.  New Castle boasts two of the largest fireworks manufacturing companies in the U.S., so every year we get shafted on the 4th of July.  No fireworks.  Really.

Instead, what happens is that two weeks after the 4th, one of the fireworks companies puts on an amazing show during the Fireworks Festival.  Its usually a really long, fabulous fireworks display because the fireworks companies alternate each year.  They pull out rare and new fireworks and we get to see them in little old New Castle: Ahhhh, the benefits of living amongst one of small town Pennsylvania’s most historic pissing contests.

No complaints here, people!  My family is nutty for 4th of July and for fireworks.  Its the one and only time of year my dad doesn’t turn into some kind of holiday-chameleon-grinch, miserable for each and every major holiday.  But no, not the 4th.  On the 4th he turns into a teenager with a monster supply of bottle rockets, which he inflicts upon the neighborhood for hours.

Last year:

We weren’t able to make the drive on the 4th of July this year, but we made it for the Fireworks Festival this past Saturday.

It’s pretty much an all day event.

The kids run around the neighborhood and the grown-ups play rummy for hours:

Or Scrabble:

And when its time for dinner, we don’t have to go far…

Then, we watch the most amazing fireworks display you’ve probably never seen.  (Unless you know about the secret!)

Happy 4th of July…finally!!
