May 22nd – Week Three:

This week the doodles are getting much stronger.  They are starting to walk around much better, although they still look like drunks stumbling around the whelping box.  They put their front paws waaaaaay out in front of them and then lean into their steps hard.  It really is like watching a toddler learning to walk.  They do a LOT of sleeping.  The only time they get up is really to eat or go to the bathroom, still assisted by mum.  But, midway through week three there is a big change!  One morning we wake up and head to the box and there are a few little peepers trying to focus on us!  Puppies don’t just open their eyes all of a sudden, its gradual.  The corners near the nose open first and you can see filmy little eyes and subtle blinking.  After about a day or so, their eyes are fully open but they still can’t focus on things.  They can follow light, so when one of us walks by, they follow us.  By the end of the week, we find that they are staring at us – they are very, very observant.  Oh, and teeth!  They are most definitely getting in their teeth.  At first, it was just swollen gums towards the back, but sure enough their sharp little puppy teeth are now out in full force.  They are chewing on each other constantly.

Week Four

Last week, the doodles were only awake for feedings.  They would literally narc out about 5 minutes after they were done eating – sometimes not even that long!  This week, they are staying up for longer and longer periods of time.  About three times a day, we take them out of the whelping box and have structured play time.  “Structured” is really just putting a blanket down in the middle of the floor and letting them explore.  So far, the dominant ones seem to be the big yellow boy (obviously, he is a beast!), the big black girl, and the fluffiest black boy.  The dogs love to bark at each other and at us and at inanimate objects.  Mostly at inanimate objects.  They are really starting to romp with one another, getting bouncier by the day!  Towards the end of week four, we gave them a taste of some canned puppy food.  Boy, did they go crazy.  A little too crazy.

They are still nursing with Hallie, but we start to soak some hard puppy food in warm water and let it sit until its nice and gummy.  Since their teeth are in enough to handle harder food, we let them go at it twice a day.  They are still weary of water.  They walk up to the water dish and stick their whole noses in, then they sneeze and gag.  I feel horrible because I know exactly how awful it feels to get water up your nose, but its so cute to watch them learning.

They also had their first baths this week!  Since no one wants to hang out with 8 stinker-doodles, we did baths in the kitchen sink.  That way, I was able to set up a drying station on the counter and we could get through everyone quickly.  They didn’t love it….but they didn’t hate it either!  Man, did their curls come out like crazy.  They looked like little poof balls when they were done.

Week Five:

Hallie is only nursing about once a day, mostly just to relieve herself of milk.  Her body doesn’t understand the weaning process and is still producing milk for eight.  The pups are doing great with the solidish food.  Two of the little girls have all ready been placed with their forever homes and we have another family coming over tonight to pick their puppy.  Two of them all ready have names, “Ally” and “Lucy” (below with the black/white collar).  The pups have finally outgrown the whelping box.  They are able to climb out and often do when Hallie walks by.  Even though they are on solid food, when they get a whiff of mum, they go absolutely crazy.  Now, they are penned in the kitchen and we have started paper training.  They are doing pretty good!  During playtime, its kind of squat-where-you-are and we have to move/remind them to “go on the paper” about a hundred times.  In the mornings, when we venture downstairs, the majority of the mess IS on the paper.  Score.  Their hair is getting shaggier and shaggier by the day and the best part?  NO SHEDDING!  We’ve been checking every day and there is no hair or fur coming off these babies.

Remember those buckets I was talking about?

Sometimes they tip over without you even noticing.  Or they sort of fade into the background because more important stuff is happening that requires you to be present.

DoodleGirl

On Sunday morning at 4 a.m., we welcomed a new litter of labradoodles into our home.

Doodles1

Everyone is doing great, including mum.

We ended up with 6 boys and 3 girls.  7 of them are black, one of them is yellow, and one is black with a white bow tie.  Had he been a full bred poodle, I suspect he might have been a tuxedo poodle.

The first two days were nerve-wracking, just because they always are.  I didn’t get any solid sleep until last night.  I’ve been eating cereal and junk food for days because my cupboards are completely barren.  I haven’t done a single fitness related activity since Friday.  Oopsie!  Its funny how quickly you can slip off track.  But, these things happen.  Nothing else to do but refocus and get back to the grind.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

9 Apr

Everything is in transition right now it seems.  No complaints here, I can’t stand when things are stagnant.

The weather has finally turned towards spring, enough that I can run outside and enjoy being indoors with the windows open.  Man, I swear there is no better sleep than being warm under the blankets with a cool breeze and city sounds coming through my window.  We sat on the porch for hours the other day and it was heavenly!  This is what I felt like after 1-2 beers:

I’ve been doing a lot of hanging out at the laundromat lately too:

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs ain’t gonna watch itself people!

My 5K is this Saturdayyyyyy!!!!!  I felt so prepared the week before Easter and now…not so much.  I missed about 4 days of training due to my own laziness and I sure am kicking myself for that now.  They say that with running, you will only ever get out of it what you put in.  Lesson.  Learned.  I’m going to stay positive and committed to running my own race.  The only failure is not finishing.

I have noticed a lack of energy in myself lately, and I know its my eating habits.  Food is fuel and I’ve been running on empty calories.  When I hit the grocery store, I committed to eating as clean as we possibly can.  She♥ is having a harder time giving up a lot of our carb-loaded staples (chips, crackers, bagels, etc.), but we are getting there!

I’m thinking of certain things as “transition foods.”  You know, better than we were eating, but not quite there yet.  Like this:

Tortillas

What other changes have we been a part of this week, you ask?  Well, one of Liberty & Chief’s first puppies drove by the house and luckily spotted us outside!  It was AWESOME to see how big Luca got.  He is bigger than Chief and definitely takes after his grand-daddy (Chief is 88 lbs., but his dad was closer to 100).

LucaUpdate

The top left photo was a picture of Luca during his last week with us, and the top right is one that his parents sent us a few months later.  Now, he is a man!!!  He’s doing so well and his family adores him.  He’s smart and was easily trained, but still has a lot of energy.  I don’t even think he’s done growing yet and he’s weighing in at a solid 90 lbs.!  Seeing him made my heart very happy!!

Endings & Beginnings

29 Dec

I had starting writing this using the WordPress app in my phone.  But when I tried to find my draft post when I signed in this morning, it was no where to be found.  Rookie mistake for thinking draft posts on my iPhone would transfer to my WordPress account on the computer?  Am I going crazy or should that be a thing you can do?

Despite how it may look, I have no clue what I am doing.

Here is a lost post from last night:

The puppies are all at their new homes.  All the puppies.  NOW I CAN DO ALL THE THINGS.

Oh, sweet silence.  And sweet hours spent not straining to hear what puppy mischief is going on in the other room.

I do miss them.  The house feels a whole lot emptier without them.

The grown-ups are starting to wonder where all the people went.

Hallie is going to take it especially hard.  She was an awesome aunt!

But, tonight I reclaimed a little bit of my kitchen.  Granted, the only light source I have right now is a clip-on spotlight I aim at different parts of my counter.  But, I wasn’t being swarmed by romping nuggets or nibbled on or constantly on the swivel for pooping off the newspaper.

Despite my walls covered in yellow linoleum flooring (don’t ask), it was exhilarating.

And will be x2 in the morning, when we don’t have to clean up puppy mess for 40 minutes before we even really wake up.

Oh, and for the record, this morning was BLISS.

I Don’t Even Know…

2 Apr

Oh my gosh, I have been an emotion wreck lately people!!  I feel like I can’t catch my balance between trying to launch this business, basically jumping into my grad school research much later than I should have, along with managing my daily life and relationship.  I’m exhausted from just typing that.

I have really been in need of some R&R since my birthday over the weekend!

Have you ever just been so stressed out you want to hold one of these guys for hours and hours?  Well I feel like that , but there are no more puppies.  Booooo.  Although that being thrown into my already hectic mix would send me over the edge in hours.

Some pretty cool stuff has been happening…

Like I turned 28, which baffles me.  When did this happen?  I feel like I was just 23 thinking: “I’m going to be like this forever!” Ha ha.  Ha.    Ha.

I know that’s right.

Being a business owner is hard, especially when you are in the process of launching.  It’s emotionally taxing, mentally exhausting, physically draining and basically just a big fun-sucker.  Just have to keep reminding myself that all this Changin’ Time stuff will all be worth it someday…

Pssh…Okay so I’ll never be as cool as the Biebs.

But I would like to get this business growing and growing.  I’m so impatient!!!

I hope none of you were anybody’s April Fool.  I made it through that particular holiday without one prank being pulled on me, which is unexpected because I live with a prankster.  Now I am on edge…

His teeth literally frighten me.

I don’t even remember what this post was supposed to be about…

If you find my brain, please send it back home.
