Friday Five: 5 Things To Do In Pittsburgh This Month!

15 Aug

This week’s Friday Five linkup (an awesome weekly event hosted by Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC, Mar @ Mar On The Run, and Cynthia @ You Signed Up For What!) is themed:  Free Friday, which means we are all writing about whatever we want!  Open-ended topics are so difficult for me because I usually have about a thousand things on my mind minute to minute.  How am I supposed to narrow things down into 5 coherent tidbits?!!  After a lot of thought, I’ve decided to share 5 things I’m looking forward to throughout the rest of August.  This link-up is about to get link-heavy so get ready!!  🙂

Friday-Five-August-Events-Pittsburgh

1.  Yoga In The Square – Yoga has been extended through August!  Hooray!!!  This is seriously one of the coolest programs I’ve been involved in – free yoga offered in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh at Market Square.  I hope they find other interesting ways to offer free yoga (I know of another program in Highland Park on Sundays, but I’ve never been!) because I will support it every single week!  I love that there is a different instructor each week, because as a new practitioner it’s nice to see the different teaching styles.  I’ve all ready got a favorite and I will be searching her out at her home studio.

2.  Little Italy Days – August 21-23, 2014 – I don’t know if it’s the inner fat kid in me or the New Castle native, but I look forward to Little Italy Days all summer.  Give me all of the meatballs, all of the Italian flags, all of the cannolis, and bring your bocci balls while you’re at it!

3.  Savor Pittsburgh – August 21, 2014 – This elegant, end-of-summer fundraiser is worth the hefty price tag!  This exciting food competition and showcase, which will be held at Stage AE for the first time, includes an evening of bites, brews, and dancing shoes catered by Pittsburgh’s top chefs!  The event itself raises money for Magee Women’s’ Hospital, but it also gives prominent chefs the opportunity to bring their culinary A-game as they compete for “Dish Of The Year.”  You don’t want to miss it!

4.  DOG JOG!!!!  – Orientation August 31st, 2014 – I heard about this program through one of the current Animal Rescue League volunteers (my friend Cassie), and knew I had to get involved!  I’ve talked about the dog jog program before over here, but orientation is right around the corner.  I hope you are all looking forward to lots of pictures and stories because I am seriously bouncing up and down excited to spend time with those pups!

5.  Bikefest – August 8-24th, 2014 – The entire month of August is dedicated to biking events, thanks to Bike Pittsburgh.  I highly suggest checking out the schedule – there are so many cool free things coming up like group rides, educational tours, and speaker series on things like the future of downtown’s bike infrastructure.  Also, don’t forget to sign up for Pedal Pittsburgh on August 24th!

BONUS:  Sept. 1st – Doggy Dip @ The Dormont Pool!  I’m including this in August because the early-bird tickets end August 29th.  This is one of my favorite things about the end of summer!  Before they close the Dormont Pool, they host a giant dog pool party!  Tickets are $25 (early-bird) or $35 at the door. Make sure you check the schedule because there are different sessions depending on what you want (small dogs only, large dogs only, or open to all).  All proceeds benefit the Western PA Humane Society.

I hope you enjoyed this Friday Five linkup, I had fun writing it and I can’t wait to participate in more of them!!

Friday Five: Goals

25 Jul

This week’s Friday Five linkup (an awesome weekly event hosted by Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC, Mar @ Mar On The Run, and Cynthia @ You Signed Up For What!) is themed: Goals!  One of my favorite things to talk about since I’m endless making new goals for myself!!  I find that being goal-oriented is one of the only things that keeps me focused at getting things done.  I’ve always expressed my goals here, and mid-summer is a fab time to check in on their progress.

Friday-Five-Goals-7-25-14

1. Pittsburgh’s Great Race 10K – Last summer, I struggled with running.  I set lofty goals for myself and then sabotaged myself when I couldn’t handle the pressure.  I registered last year and talked a big game about how I was going to run in September.  Then, in one of the most disappointing moments I’ve ever had in myself, I sold my bib the weekend of the race because I just wasn’t able to run that far.  Not this year.  This year, I’ve kept my eye on the prize and I’ve all ready got my 6.1 mile leg of the Pittsburgh Marathon under my belt.  I’ve been more realistic with my training schedule, I’ve been more focused on nutrition, and I generally feel like I’m in a better place mentally with running.  The race is 10 weeks out and I feel like I’m right on track!

2.  Lucky # 12 – This is a goal I’ve really struggled with over the years because I’ve generally been a very lazy person.  BUT!  This summer I’ve finally pushed past my plateau and I think I may actually reach my goal.  By the end of the summer, I hope to be down to 175 lbs.  I’m only 12 lbs. away from hitting that milestone (a milestone which I haven’t seen since probably high school!) and I’m feeling pretty confident that I can crush that goal, too.

At my heaviest vs. last weekend!

At my heaviest vs. last weekend!

3.  4 Week Challenge Group – This one isn’t quite as serious as the other 2, but committing to a 4 week challenge group where you are asked to participate daily is kind of a big commitment.  The group happens in a secret Facebook page and I’ve found it to be incredibly helpful.  I’m getting tons of ideas and support from the other members, which is the reason I joined.  There have been MANY days in which I would’ve let the lazy get the better of me, but seeing the “sweaty” pics the other members posts pushes me to be active.  The challenge is over the first week of August, and I’m honestly going to miss it!

4.  Service – Back in April, I made a commitment to volunteer more.  And by more I mean period, at all.  The beginning of the summer sent my personal life into a bit of a tailspin, so unfortunately this goal got pushed to the back burner for a few months.  Through this awesome gal, I learned about this awesome program through the Animal Rescue League where runners volunteer to jog with the shelter dogs.  What an incredibly mutually beneficial program for everyone involved – the shelter dogs get personal human interaction, physical time in the great outdoors, and valuable social skills.  The shelter gets free man power and I get to be active while making a difference.  I mean how great is that?

5.  Pittsburgh Half Marathon – I basically started running so that I could run this race.  No pressure or anything.  It has been my goal race for years.  YEARS. YEARS!!!!!!!!!  2015 is about to be my year, I just know it.  I’m crazy superstitious about stuff, and I’m obsessed with the idea of running 13.1 miles for the 1st time the year I turn 31.  TRY AND TELL ME THAT’S NOT A SIGN….

Friday Five: Five Friday Favorites

18 Jul

It’s Friday!!!   TGIF, right?  This week felt like it was dragging on because I’ve got some fun things happening this weekend including checking out Open Streets in Downtown Pittsburgh on Sunday.  There is supposed to be outdoor yoga in Market Square, along with spinning, dodgeball, rock climbing, biking, and more!  See you there?

This week’s Friday Five linkup (an awesome weekly event hosted by Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC, Mar @ Mar On The Run, and Cynthia @ You Signed Up For What!) is themed: Five Friday Favorites.  Have a great weekend, everyone!

1.  Stay classy, Chen.  My first favorite thing right now is Big Brother!  I am obsessed with this show and I absolutely cannot get enough of it – and Fridays mean I’m still riding the happiness wave of BB Thursday nights.  Which works out because it’s on 3 times a week and there are 24/7 live feeds.  I think I would be an incredible player, but I would never audition.  I prefer to spend my time out of the spotlight whenever I can!    Let me tell you that this season is 109358092385 x infinity better than last season.  It helps that my brother has recently discovered the show so we are able to text about it constantly.  My favorite player right now is Derrick, who is playing a very smart, strategic game.  I would love to see the undercover cop take the whole thing!  Plus that voice/accent is sexilicious.

KaleChips

2.  My favorite food habit lately is GREENS.  All of the greens.  On Fridays, I’m planning out what to grab at the weekend farmer’s markets and I have been burning through greens faster than I ever thought possible!  I’ve been alternating spinach, arugula, carrot greens, kale, and chard between my smoothies.  I just read that you can even use cabbage in your smoothie!  The chard freaked me out enough this morning that I think that’s enough adventure for this week.  Of course I will always have a deep, unhealthy addiction to homemade kale chips.  I just cannot get enough of their salty crunchy goodness.  I think I ate a salad every day for lunch this week and I want more more more!!!!

3.  My favorite state of mind for Friday and of lately is happiness.  I am not a naturally positive person, but I’ve learned that practicing positivity improves my attitude.  I am learning to forgive quickly and look for the good in every situation.  In moments when I’m feeling frustrated, sad, or angry I force myself to take a deep breath and be thankful for the frustration, sadness, or anger.  It is a blessing to be alive and to have the opportunity to go through such trying times.  My life isn’t that bad and I’m not that ungrateful of a person to take any of this for granted.  Besides, life is too short to be miserable all the time!  Negative emotions can be healthy, but I now place a time limit on them.  Think NBA shot clock-length time limit.  Seriously, it’s not worth my energy.

4. Fridays mean a touch up on the fingers and toes so I can be presentable for weekend festivities!  My favorite nail polish of the week ok, probably the whole summer is Play Date by Essie.  It reminds me of the Pantone 2014 Color of the Year “Radiant Orchid,” which I adore but would never actually paint my walls.  Bonus points for making even the pastiest of us look somewhat tan.  Happiness in a bottle!  But without all the guilt of tequila.

5.  My favorite thing I’m looking forward to this weekend is experimenting with some homemade popsicles!  I feel like a little kid on Christmas with these, but I’ve been accumulating recipes on a Pinterest board devoted to popsicles/smoothies for months now and no molds.   I love the idea of using organic, local, fresh ingredients and making a healthy summertime treat.   I can’t wait to share some of the keepers with you guys!

If you’re into smoothies, check back next week because I’ve got a sweet giveaway coming up!

Friday Five: Five Things About Me

27 Jun

This week’s Friday Five linkup (an awesome weekly event hosted by Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC, Mar @ Mar On The Run, and Cynthia @ You Signed Up For What!) is themed: 5 Things About Me.  This is my first week linking up with some of my favorite bloggers, and it just happens to be a perfect theme to introduce myself!

Friday-Five-Five-Things-About-Me

1.  I love to read, but don’t make nearly enough time for it.  I absolutely refuse to go e-reader.  There is absolutely nothing more pleasurable to me than thumbing my finger along the pages of a brand spanking new paperback.  If they ever stop printing books, I swear an oath to all that right and holy that I will never read another new release!  I will not relent!  Save the printed word!  Anyway…this summer, I bought several new reads and promised myself that I would get through a few of them.  Right now I’m almost finished with Orange Is The New Black (yeah, I’m a bit late to that party!) and I can’t WAIT to sink my teeth into The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gaiman.

2.  My dream in life:  to run a small urban farmette.  I’m in love with the idea of being self-sufficient, growing my own food, canning, and raising small domesticated animals.  People think of this concept as terribly out of character for me because I’m the type of girl who kind of hates to get dirty.  I make exceptions! 🙂   Eventually I would like to turn my front yard into an edible foodscape and if I can convince my borough that it’s a good idea — get some chickens for my backyard.  I’m pretty sure my cost of living would drop exponentially if I had a farmette.  I need to make this happen!

3.  I am currently training for my first official 10K – Pittsburgh’s Great Race.  I ran 6.1 miles in the Pittsburgh Marathon Relay back in May, so hopefully my training will pay off and I will have an official 10K PR of around 1:05:00 or less.  <– Throwing that goal time out there like it ain’t no thang!

4.  My favorite thing to eat and make in the whole wide world is key lime pie.  I have a very distinct memory of a trip I took to Key West with my grandmother and 2 of my cousins.  I think we ate so much key lime pie on that trip, we were all at risk of turning into key lime pie.  They had it everywhere and in all of these glorious variations.  We even got a piece of key lime pie frozen on a stick.  Heavenly!  I remember making them often in high school and even into college.  I haven’t made one in a long time, though…no time like the summer, right?!

5.  I love what I do for a living – owning a small business has been the most character-building, hard, frustrating, exhilarating, gratifying, terrifying experience of my life.  I have learned so much about myself in the last few years (not all of it is good!) and I’ve also seen glimpses of the person I am destined to become.  Some days I feel like I still haven’t found my niche in life, my passion.  I’m okay with that.  Eventually I will figure it out, but for the last few years it has been such a blessing to develop, launch, and grow a successful company.
