Friday Five: Goals

25 Jul

This week’s Friday Five linkup (an awesome weekly event hosted by Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC, Mar @ Mar On The Run, and Cynthia @ You Signed Up For What!) is themed: Goals!  One of my favorite things to talk about since I’m endless making new goals for myself!!  I find that being goal-oriented is one of the only things that keeps me focused at getting things done.  I’ve always expressed my goals here, and mid-summer is a fab time to check in on their progress.

1. Pittsburgh’s Great Race 10K – Last summer, I struggled with running.  I set lofty goals for myself and then sabotaged myself when I couldn’t handle the pressure.  I registered last year and talked a big game about how I was going to run in September.  Then, in one of the most disappointing moments I’ve ever had in myself, I sold my bib the weekend of the race because I just wasn’t able to run that far.  Not this year.  This year, I’ve kept my eye on the prize and I’ve all ready got my 6.1 mile leg of the Pittsburgh Marathon under my belt.  I’ve been more realistic with my training schedule, I’ve been more focused on nutrition, and I generally feel like I’m in a better place mentally with running.  The race is 10 weeks out and I feel like I’m right on track!

2.  Lucky # 12 – This is a goal I’ve really struggled with over the years because I’ve generally been a very lazy person.  BUT!  This summer I’ve finally pushed past my plateau and I think I may actually reach my goal.  By the end of the summer, I hope to be down to 175 lbs.  I’m only 12 lbs. away from hitting that milestone (a milestone which I haven’t seen since probably high school!) and I’m feeling pretty confident that I can crush that goal, too.

At my heaviest vs. last weekend!

At my heaviest vs. last weekend!

3.  4 Week Challenge Group – This one isn’t quite as serious as the other 2, but committing to a 4 week challenge group where you are asked to participate daily is kind of a big commitment.  The group happens in a secret Facebook page and I’ve found it to be incredibly helpful.  I’m getting tons of ideas and support from the other members, which is the reason I joined.  There have been MANY days in which I would’ve let the lazy get the better of me, but seeing the “sweaty” pics the other members posts pushes me to be active.  The challenge is over the first week of August, and I’m honestly going to miss it!

4.  Service – Back in April, I made a commitment to volunteer more.  And by more I mean period, at all.  The beginning of the summer sent my personal life into a bit of a tailspin, so unfortunately this goal got pushed to the back burner for a few months.  Through this awesome gal, I learned about this awesome program through the Animal Rescue League where runners volunteer to jog with the shelter dogs.  What an incredibly mutually beneficial program for everyone involved – the shelter dogs get personal human interaction, physical time in the great outdoors, and valuable social skills.  The shelter gets free man power and I get to be active while making a difference.  I mean how great is that?

5.  Pittsburgh Half Marathon – I basically started running so that I could run this race.  No pressure or anything.  It has been my goal race for years.  YEARS. YEARS!!!!!!!!!  2015 is about to be my year, I just know it.  I’m crazy superstitious about stuff, and I’m obsessed with the idea of running 13.1 miles for the 1st time the year I turn 31.  TRY AND TELL ME THAT’S NOT A SIGN….

I hope you enjoyed this Friday Five linkup, I had fun writing it and I can’t wait to participate in more of them!!

Ice Skating N’at

9 Jan

The last few days have been busy, but uneventful.  I ran 2 miles on both Sunday and Monday – which I wasn’t sure I would be able to pull off!  I didn’t work out on Tuesday because there was some confusion with the schedule at work and I didn’t plan my time accordingly.  Lame.  On Wednesday, I managed to get in 1 mile on the treadmill while I was babysitting.  But between the heated, fighting noises and the suspicious quiet periods coming from upstairs, I was too paranoid to leave them alone for too long!  I make it a point to enter all of my runs into the Map My Run app on my phone.  I want to track exactly how many miles I log in 2014.  Hopefully I look back at this post in June and am amused with this mileage!

We spent the afternoon ice skating with family at the Schenley Ice Rink, so the 1 mile worked to my advantage.  The two older boys do not need those plastic grannie walker looking things, they were being used for battering ram purposes and attempting tricks.  In other words, making all of the other ice skaters very paranoid of being taken out at the knees or rammed by accident.  RED alternated following them and being pushed by them, so she was having a ball.  DR was struggling a bit more than the older boys, but still had a lot of fun skating around the loop close to the wall.  I’m looking forward to the family ice skating party later this month, where dozens and dozens of Christina’s relatives get together for a big ice skating party.

Why are ice skates so painful?  My arches and ankles were killing me and I somehow got a blister halfway up the back of my calf.  If I had gone 2 miles, I might have pushed my legs past the point of having fun! And despite following 2-4 children around and not losing a single item of clothing, I somehow lost my own glove between the ice skating rink and the car.  Figures!

Despite sleeping in past my alarm this morning, I do plan on hitting the gym tonight to get some kind of physical activity in before the end of the day.  I’m feeling very accomplished  because I’m really staying committed to doing some kind of physical activity every day.  The weather seems to have calmed down now and is cooperating, which gives me more options for activities and locations.

So far, 2014 is just wonderful. 🙂

No More Days Off!

5 Jan

Swear, I sat on the couch earlier today and said OUT LOUD to Christina: “I’m just not going to run today and I will really hit the gym hard tomorrow.”  And then I sat there for like 45 minutes thinking about what I had said.  That’s such a lie!  I will hit the gym just as hard as I normally do, but it will never make up for a missed opportunity.  I finally woke up feeling like I’m on the other side of this bug.  And yet I’m convincing myself to take an un-needed day off?  Lame.  So, I did what must be done when you’ve piddled around so long that it’s now dark outside and the polar vortex has begun its assault.  I hit the treadmill and did 1 mile of HILLS.  YOU GUYS.  All of the hills.  And then, because I evaluated my condition and determined that I was not going to die, I committed to going another mile of no hills at a comfortable, slow pace.  I made it three quarters into the second mile and my hips started to feel really tight.  So, I walked the last quarter and finished in almost exactly the same time as my first mile!  Hollerrrrrr.

Lunch today was tasty and was also my dinner.  Let’s be honest, I may even eat some for lunch again tomorrow.  It was that good.  It was a cold  quinoa salad with grilled chicken, scallions, cranberries, and pecans.  I will post the recipe on Monday.

Sneaky Snacks I ate today:  Some of the MIL’s banana bread.  I can’t resist it!  A bottle of diet coke.  I think that might be it, you guys!  This is usually where I feel like I should celebrate with a big bowl of ice cream…so I think I will chew gum and drink water.  Lots of water.

It’s October 3rd.

3 Oct

If you’re wondering why I’ve been so quiet, it’s because there is absolutely nothing fun going on in my life.  I’m still wallowing in misery over not running the Great Race, still not committed to working out, and I’ve been eating my feelings for weeks.

But then I realized..

Seriously still my favorite movie, never gets old.  And it still so perfectly can be used to describe my life.

I finally found a calorie counting app that tracks more than just calories.  It’s called Net Diary Pro and so far I love it more than any of the other dozen calorie counting apps I’ve had over the years.  The analysis button gives you pointers on how much fat you’re taking in, how little fiber you’ve eaten, etc.  I’m hoping that religiously keeping track of what I’m eating will help me figure out where I’m going wrong (she says as she shoves 3 raspberry cream Sarris chocolates in her mouth).

So, yeah.  That’s what’s happening in my life on October 3rd.
