Ice Skating N’at

9 Jan

The last few days have been busy, but uneventful.  I ran 2 miles on both Sunday and Monday – which I wasn’t sure I would be able to pull off!  I didn’t work out on Tuesday because there was some confusion with the schedule at work and I didn’t plan my time accordingly.  Lame.  On Wednesday, I managed to get in 1 mile on the treadmill while I was babysitting.  But between the heated, fighting noises and the suspicious quiet periods coming from upstairs, I was too paranoid to leave them alone for too long!  I make it a point to enter all of my runs into the Map My Run app on my phone.  I want to track exactly how many miles I log in 2014.  Hopefully I look back at this post in June and am amused with this mileage!

We spent the afternoon ice skating with family at the Schenley Ice Rink, so the 1 mile worked to my advantage.  The two older boys do not need those plastic grannie walker looking things, they were being used for battering ram purposes and attempting tricks.  In other words, making all of the other ice skaters very paranoid of being taken out at the knees or rammed by accident.  RED alternated following them and being pushed by them, so she was having a ball.  DR was struggling a bit more than the older boys, but still had a lot of fun skating around the loop close to the wall.  I’m looking forward to the family ice skating party later this month, where dozens and dozens of Christina’s relatives get together for a big ice skating party.

Why are ice skates so painful?  My arches and ankles were killing me and I somehow got a blister halfway up the back of my calf.  If I had gone 2 miles, I might have pushed my legs past the point of having fun! And despite following 2-4 children around and not losing a single item of clothing, I somehow lost my own glove between the ice skating rink and the car.  Figures!

Despite sleeping in past my alarm this morning, I do plan on hitting the gym tonight to get some kind of physical activity in before the end of the day.  I’m feeling very accomplished  because I’m really staying committed to doing some kind of physical activity every day.  The weather seems to have calmed down now and is cooperating, which gives me more options for activities and locations.

So far, 2014 is just wonderful. 🙂

No More Days Off!

5 Jan

Swear, I sat on the couch earlier today and said OUT LOUD to Christina: “I’m just not going to run today and I will really hit the gym hard tomorrow.”  And then I sat there for like 45 minutes thinking about what I had said.  That’s such a lie!  I will hit the gym just as hard as I normally do, but it will never make up for a missed opportunity.  I finally woke up feeling like I’m on the other side of this bug.  And yet I’m convincing myself to take an un-needed day off?  Lame.  So, I did what must be done when you’ve piddled around so long that it’s now dark outside and the polar vortex has begun its assault.  I hit the treadmill and did 1 mile of HILLS.  YOU GUYS.  All of the hills.  And then, because I evaluated my condition and determined that I was not going to die, I committed to going another mile of no hills at a comfortable, slow pace.  I made it three quarters into the second mile and my hips started to feel really tight.  So, I walked the last quarter and finished in almost exactly the same time as my first mile!  Hollerrrrrr.

Lunch today was tasty and was also my dinner.  Let’s be honest, I may even eat some for lunch again tomorrow.  It was that good.  It was a cold  quinoa salad with grilled chicken, scallions, cranberries, and pecans.  I will post the recipe on Monday.

Sneaky Snacks I ate today:  Some of the MIL’s banana bread.  I can’t resist it!  A bottle of diet coke.  I think that might be it, you guys!  This is usually where I feel like I should celebrate with a big bowl of ice cream…so I think I will chew gum and drink water.  Lots of water.

That Time Old Ladies Did More Crunches Than Me…

Are you also sick of reading end of year recaps on blogs?  Pretty sure I get every single one of your posts in my reader’s feed – throughout the year I’ve even commented, liked, and shared those posts.  Please do not make me relive it again with you because you are feeling nostalgic, k?  Thanks.

MOVING RIGHT ALONG…

Since I’m all about flexibility as a means to success lately, I went to my first ever fitness class last night! That’s right, kids. I got in a run early and then I made it to a class.  All fitness classes are included in my membership at the Carnegie Library of Homestead Athletic Club, so I thought it was about time I take advantage.  I chose Total Body Sculpting, which was as a low to moderate intensity body pump class.

When I walked into the classroom, I quickly realized that I was the youngest attendee by about 20 years.  This was very comforting in a way because I knew I wasn’t going to get left behind!  Everyone was very nice to me and one of the ladies helped me find free weights and a mat.

As we started warming up, I remember thinking Oh my gosh, hopefully this isn’t so slow that I feel like I wasted an hour of my night…  Let me tell you – those older ladies can MOVE!  The moves were very easy to follow along and I was getting my sweat on.  They actually did more crunches than I could.  Shame!  Shock!  Motivation!  I was determined not to be surpassed by the elderly, so I pushed myself hard the whole time.  I dipped low during squats and lunges then I kept good form during arms.  BOO YAH!  The only time I had trouble keeping up was during leg lifts and only because I got a crazy bad cramp in my hip flexor?  I don’t know what that’s about.  And oh yeah, crunches because I haven’t worked out my abs in 5 years.  Basically, I got my ass handed to me by an senior citizen named Cookie.  Also, I’m pretty sure that most of those ladies stuck around for yoga afterwards – color me impressed.   I, on the other hand, booked it for my car and a bottle of water!

I was a little stiff last night when I got home and I’m a bit sore today.  Not P90X sore, but I know I was definitely working some muscle groups that haven’t seen the light of day for a few months.  I needed that.

Christina is dealing with a seriously mean head cold, so we spent a lazy morning together and I’m sure will spend New Year’s Eve relaxing at home.  I’m thinking I might do some Zumba today after work to loosen up my hamstrings!

Y’all stay safe out there tonight and enjoy the last few hours of 2013.  I will check you in 2014! 🙂
